Population growth contributes in many cases also to increase in financial resources. Cities where population and economic growth go hand in hand can be considered to be in a fortunate position. While some 25 million Europeans live in “dynamically shrinking” cities, some 165 million citizens of urban areas undergoing continued growth face their own specific set of challenges. How can growing and rich cities be expanded in sustainable way? How can economic, ecological and social objectives be reconciled in the complex process or urban planning? These are the questions researcher Ivan Tosics explores through the example of the Viennese Aspern Seestadt and Stockholm’s Hammarby Sjöstad in his recent article.
